| Eighth grade -
Eighth graders have earned the opportunity to be in one of the four
different courses in theatre that follow: 1) Asian Theatre Acting
Styles - This is a high energy, hands-on approach to theatre
history focusing on Asian styles of acting in which the students will
research different styles, play related theatre games, do art
projects, watch videos, and enact scenes. Students will prepare an
exhibition of what they have learned to perform for the rest of the
eighth grade as well as families, friends, and faculty. Students are
assessed on short assignments, positive participation, a comparison
chart of the forms of Asian drama, and their preparation of a final
exhibition. |
| 2) Acting with Masks and Puppets
– This course is tailored to expand the vocal and physical range of
expression of the individual student. The class will engage in
skill-building exercises, improvise scenes, and experiment with a
variety of masks and puppets. They will learn about masks and puppets
around the world and make masks and puppets themselves to use in class.
The class will prepare a short presentation for the end of the term.
Students will be assessed on positive participation, use of a wide
variety of movements and voices, and journal entries explaining their
choices and responses. |
| 3) Play performance - This course
will be an in-depth exploration of the audition to performance process
in a long one-act play. The students will research their roles and the
historical and cultural context of the play. They will stretch their
range of physical and vocal expression and help to create their own
costumes and scenery as well. They will be expected to learn their lines
and blocking promptly and will need assistance from parents as well as
frequent practice at home. Students are assessed on
preparation for class, their grasp of the culture of the play, a
character profile paper, and the development of their roles using
appropriate speech and movement techniques.4 |
| 4) Technical Theatre - This
course focuses on the behind-the-scenes realm of the theatre in the
creation of scenery, costumes, and lighting for a production. The
students will learn techniques in stagecraft and apply those techniques
to designing and building the May and June productions at the Middle
School including the Spring Concert productions. Attendance at both the
Instrumental Concert and the Choral Concert in the spring are required.
Students take frequent quizzes and engage in group projects to assess
their learning. They also receive grades for responsible use of
equipment and execution of tasks.
